First of I like to say that I have been a big fan of Metallica since the early ’90s and if you go through this blogs archive you’ll find I have even blogged about Metallica. My problem or more to the point, as the title of this post suggest, my question has more to do with Kerrang TV than with Metallica.
I recently been watching Kerrang TV in the morning and when they were showing a whole hour of Metallica videos under the title of ‘Metallica – the lowdown’ or something along those lines, they were picking videos from specific years. The last video in this hour they played was ‘all nightmare long’ ( all nightmare long )
and let me tell you the video that was made to bare this title surely deserves it! I don’t specifically have anything against that video, it’s imagery and message, if indeed it has one. The problem I have with this video is I don’t think a video like this should be shown on television at 10 am. Irrelevant of the fact that it might be a school day, that there is such a thing as parental supervision, etc.
It’s clearly double standards if you ask me. I shall tell you why!
Let’s look at the video ‘Just like a Pill’ by Pink ( pink videos ) More often then not the word ‘Bitch’ is bleeped out during the day. Some Marilyn Manson ( Marilyn Manson! )songs get the bleep treatment and some of his songs are only played late at night! Furthermore some Eminem songs get the bleep treatment!
So do you see the point I’m trying to make yet? If we are concerned about a few words here and there why aren’t we concerned about some of the imagery in music videos? showing a little more of the female form like in the afore mentioned Pink Video is ‘normal’ nowadays. Having videos about shootings and crime in general on the Tv on some channels seems to be fine nowadays?? But all out horrific, bordering on the nightmarish imagery in videos should not be shown till after the watershed!
Or maybe we should go back to the days when the Beatles where crafting Lyrics like
Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes
These lyrics are from the Song ‘Lucy in the sky with diamonds’ I assume that almost everybody nowadays knows what this song is about, it is about the drug itself and the taking of the drug LSD.
I do recall hearing this song on a breakfast show on National radio not too long ago.
So please let me know what you think about this?
